Ann O. Hammer

Ann O. Hammer, 83, of Red Wing, passed away on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017 at her home. She was born December 24, 1933, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Martin and Julia O'Toole. Ann graduated from Pittsburgh Hospital Nursing School in 1954. After graduation, she came to Minnesota to pursue learning from Sister Kenney. She married Donald Hammer in 1957. They embarked on an adventure to Montana where their three children were born. In 1969, they returned to Minnesota. Ann continued her nursing career by working at St. John's Hospital, Red Wing Health Center and High Park Nursing Facility. She also taught certified nursing assistants (CNA) at the Red Wing Technical College and ended her career as a tester for CNAs. In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, horse racing, stamping, sewing, knitting, yoga and watching sports, particularly hockey.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Donald; daughters, Erin (Mark) Simunds of Lino Lakes, Erica (Todd) Stangeland of Otsego; son, Brian (Jenny) of Rogers; grandchildren, Sydney and Gunnar Stangeland and Morgan Hammer; sister, Patricia McKenna; sister-in-law, Elizabeth O'Toole and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Mass of the Resurrection will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2017 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas M. Kommers officiating. Private family interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Church of St. Joseph Decoration Committee, Mayo Clinic Health System-Red Wing Hospice or Kiwanis Eliminate.
