Alvin L. Steberg age 83 of the Wanamingo area died today, September 11, 2008 at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester. Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, September 14, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Lands Lutheran Church in Zumbrota with Pastor David Krinke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, 2008 from 2:00 � 5:00 PM at the Mahn Family Funeral Home � Larson Chapel in Zumbrota and on Sunday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Alvin Loken Steberg was born on February 2, 1925 in Minneola Township, Goodhue County, MN to Alvin R. and Olga A. (nee Loken) Steberg. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Alvin graduated from Wanamingo High School in 1943. He entered the United States Merchant Marines, served during World War II and was honorably discharged. He returned to the Wanamingo area and started an excavating business. On June 20, 1948 he married Murial Benson at Holden Lutheran Church. They made their home in Wanamingo Township. He ran his excavating business until 1962 when he started working for IBM Corp. in Rochester. Alvin retired from IBM in 1987. Alvin was a member of Lands Lutheran church, where he was an usher and served on the cemetery board. He was also a member of the Wanamingo Lions Club, 65/50 Club in Zumbrota, Goodhue County Historical Society, Goodhue County Extension Committee, Wanamingo Honor Squad, VFW and American Legion Clubs, National Association of Power Engineers and was part of the first Honor Flight group from Minnesota. He enjoyed older tractors, photography and genealogy. Alvin is survived by his wife, Murial, three daughters, Janelle (Jeff) Hennings of Olympia, WA, Carol (Bob) Whitworth and Wanda Dahlgren, both of Rochester, four sons, Allen (Deborah) Steberg of Middleton, WI, Owen (Beth) Steberg of Hader, Mark (Mary) Steberg of Fond du Lac, WI and Jon (Norma Moreno) Steberg of Rochester, twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren and one brother, Harlan Steberg of Zumbrota. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Aileen Schliep.
