Alvin George Mehrkens

Alvin Mehrkens, 85, of Zumbrota died Wednesday January 26, 2022 at the Zumbrota Nursing Home.

Alvin George Mehrkens was born December 12, 1936 in Goodhue County, the son of Arthur and Lilly (Kunde) Mehrkens.  A graduate of Zumbrota High School, Alvin worked 30 years at IBM in Rochester.  Following retirement, he and his brothers worked together as handymen.  He married Merle Jeanette Westgard on July 20, 1963 at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota.  A member of Christ Lutheran, he served on the church council.  He enjoyed gardening, making horse radish, fishing, bowling, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons, Brent (Suzanne) Mehrkens of Fort Myers, Florida, and Mark (Liz) Mehrkens of Zumbrota; four grandchildren, Jessica Mehrkens, Brandon (Ashley) Mehrkens, Jake Mehrkens, and Lilly Mehrkens; a great-grandchild Taylor Mehrkens; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2007; parents; two brothers, Luverne and Earl Mehrkens; and two sisters, Rosie Olson, and Mabel Nelson.

A memorial service is planned for Friday March 25, 2022 at 12:00 PM at Christ Lutheran Church in Zumbrota.  The Rev. Wayne Schoch will officiate.  Visitation will occur one hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will follow the memorial service at the Zumbrota Cemetery, after which a celebration of life will commence at the VFW in Zumbrota.

If so desired, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor’s choosing.  Mahn Family Funeral Home, Larson Chapel, in Zumbrota is in charge of arrangements.
