Allyn "Gene" Olson

Allyn "Gene" J. Olson, 85, of Bay City, Wisconsin, died Saturday, December 31, 2016 at his home. He was born May 13, 1931, in Star Prairie, Wisconsin to Archie and Opal (Larson) Olson. After his father died and his mother remarried, his family moved to Bay City and he graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1949. On April 17, 1951, he was united in marriage to Joyce Stock. He enlisted in the US Air Force in September of that year and served until he was honorably discharged in 1955. After living briefly in the Twin Cities, they returned to Bay City where they raised their family. For a short time, he worked as a commercial fisherman before beginning to work at PPG, later becoming ADM, where he worked until his retirement.
Gene was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Bay City American Legion Post # 357, Pierce County 40 & 8 and he had been involved with the River Bluff Historical Society. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, having enjoyed many family trips to Canada, where fishing was at its best. He was a ball player and had played on the Bay City baseball and softball teams. He loved watching the Green Bay Packers and was a fan of the Bay City Bombers.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce; 4 children, Jeanie Simon, Cindy (Dale) Wittenberg, Fred (Barb) Olson and Brad (Cindy) Olson; 8 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 1 brother, Jim (Nancy) Turvaville.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and step-father, Fred Turvaville; sisters, Janet (Gene) Kittilson and Juanita (Gene) Wiley; a granddaughter, Amy Simon and son-in-law, Mike Simon.
A celebration of Gene's life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2017, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend Kristen Schlauderaff officiating. Burial with military honors by the Bay City Legion will be at the Bay City Cemetery. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Memorials preferred to the church or donor's choice.
