Alice Evangeline Axelson Holmes, age 90,of Montello, Wisconsin, formerly of Welch, died Friday, December 28, 2007, at the Montello Care Center.
She was bornon March 7, 1917, to Henry and Esther (Norell) Axelson, and grew up in Welch Minnesota. She graduated Valedictorian from Red Wing High School and then completed nurses training at Bethesda Hospital Nursing School in St. Paul. She continued her education at the Frontier Nursing Service in Kentucky specializing in midwifery. After completion of this training she joined the Santal Mission of the World Mission Prayer League and went to Mohulpahari Hospital in the province of Bihar India and worked several years as a missionary nurse. She returned home and completed her education at the University of Minnesota with a Bachelors Degree in Teaching. She returned to India and was instrumental in founding the Mohulpahari Nursing School where she served as Director. She served a total of 23 years in India. Upon returning to the United States, she married Carlton Holmes of Wisconsin at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church on December 14, 1949. They lived on a farm in Cross Plains, Wisconsin. After retirement, they spent two years in the Peace Corps in Equador. They moved to Montello in the 1990's.
She is survived by her husband Carlton, four children, Robert (Kathryn) Holmes of Duluth MN; Lawrence Holmes of Fort Wayne IN; and Thomas (Jan) Holmes of Pine River WI; Signe (Joseph) Perrigoue of Rio WI; five grandchildren; one great grandchild; two brothers, Edward and Kenneth (Willene) Axelson of Wanamingo MN; one sister in law, Fern Axelson of Zumbro Falls MN; Alice is also survived by many nieces and nephews and innumerable friends.
Alice was also preceded in death by her brothers Franklin and Gilbert (Jeanette) Axelson and her sister Ilene Axelson Scrivner.
Funeral Services for Alice will be held at 11:00 am. Friday at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church with Reverend Robert Albing officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the time of services Friday at the church.
