Alfred Werner Tomhave

December 28, 1919 — July 28, 2013

Alfred Werner Tomhave, 93, of Red Wing died July 28, 2013 at his home at Deer Crest. He was born December 28, 1919 in Frontenac, MN to John and Ella (Vagts) Tomhave. He attended rural schools in Frontenac and Hager City, WI. After school, he worked on his family's farm and delivered milk around the area. In 1940, he joined the U.S. National Guard serving in the Aleutians during the war. He married Dorothea Dodge on May 26, 1941 prior to being deployed. He served in WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War before retiring in 1968. During his distinguished career, he and his family lived in Japan and Germany along with several tours of duty at Fort Leonard Wood, MO in combat engineer units. After his military retirement, he continued to work as a civil servant for 16 years before his final retirement in 1984 and honored as "Mr. Maintenance" at Fort Leonard Wood. After living in rural Waynesville, MO for a period of time, the couple moved to Red Wing in 1989. He was a member of the Burnson Lillyblad VFW #1218, the Leo C. Peterson American Legion #54 and The Retired Officers Association. He attended and was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church where he also served on the board. He enjoyed serving the church and made it a point to be involved in each church he and his family attended throughout the years. Alfred loved the outdoors and enjoyed duck and pheasant hunting. He was also an avid bowler and golfer. Alfred will be remembered as an exceptional man, a servant of God, a loving husband and father, a decorated soldier and a fluent speaker of Donald Duck (a talent he passed onto his sons).
He is survived by his wife of more than 72 years, Dorothea; two sons, Richard (Jacquie) Tomhave of Bee Cave, TX, Colonel (USAF Retired) Steven (Jetty Ann) Tomhave of Aledo, TX; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter Tomhave; and a son-in-law, the Honorable Bill Wilson, as well as many nieces and nephews, other family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Roxanne Wilson; six brothers, John, Leonard, Lewis, Wilfred, Victor and Harry Tomhave; five sisters, Esther Revoir, Harriet Tomhave, Alberta Johnson, Eleanor Arndt and Clara Lysaker.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 2, 2013 at Concordia Lutheran Church with Rev. Tyge Zucker officiating. Burial will be at Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred to Red Wing Home Care and Hospice or Concordia Lutheran Church.
