Alfred Starz age 86 of Lake City died Tuesday February 28, 2006 at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, MN. Alfred was born February 18, 1920 in Chester Township in Wabasha County to Albert & Maye (Sprenger) Starz. He graduated from Lincoln High School in1937 in Lake City. Alfred entered the Army in March of 1942 and served during WWII in the European Theater; he was discharged 1945. After being discharged he returned to the Zumbro Falls area and married Ruth Ann Engelhart September 21, 1946 at the United Methodist Church in Red Wing. They lived in the Zumbro Falls area where they operated a dairy farm and raised pure bread Ayrshire cattle until they retired and moved to Lake City in 1989. His wife Ruth worked as area correspondent for the Rochester Post Bulletin and several other papers. Alfred was a member of the Zumbro Falls United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the church board and held other church offices, Zumbro Falls VFW, Zumbro Falls Cemetery Board, Bear Valley Watershed Board, Wabasha County Draft Board, he was a member and officer of the Minnesota Ayrshire Association, he served on the board of directors of Rochester Dairy Coop and Association of Milk Producers Inc. He was also a member of the Lake City Seniors Group and the Mazeppa Seniors Group. He enjoyed reading music and communicating with his Army buddies. He is survived by his wife, one son Robert (Peggy) of Atwater, MN; two daughters Pamela (Len) Laulainen of Minnetonka, MN, Amy (Terry) Niemann of Robbinsdale, MN; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one brother Rod (Lois) of Cottonwood, AZ; three sisters Win Keppel, Dorothy Warren of Santa Rosa, CA, Marian (Herb) Ellison of Escondido, CA. He was preceded in death by one son Jerry and one infant son. A Funeral service will be held Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Lake City with the Reverends Don Dillon and Ken Rogers officiating. Burial will be in the Zumbro Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 3 to 5 at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church. Military rites will be conducted by the Zumbro Falls VFW. Memorials are preferred to the Zumbro Falls Cemetery Association or the Zumbro Falls United Methodist Church.
