Alex Clarence Huppert, age 92 of Red Wing, died April 2, 2013 at the Red Wing Health Center, surrounded by his loving family. Alex now joins his wife, Lorraine, who died on March 28, 2013. He was born July 15, 1920 in Trimbelle Twsp, WI to John and Margaret (Zirnhelt) Huppert. He attended Big River Parochial School and worked on the family farm. He served in the United States Army from November 1942 until May 1946 in the 232nd Infantry Regiment, (Rainbow Division) 42d Infantry Division while stationed in Europe, and fought in The Battle of the Bulge. He received The Purple Heart, The Bronze Star, Combat Medal, and Sharp Shooter Medal. On October 5, 1949, Alex married Lorraine Duden at her parent's family farm. The couple owned and lived at the Skyline Ballroom in Red Wing and sold the Ballroom in the early 60's. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Church of St. Joseph, and a 30 year member of the local 49er's IUOE, VFW Burnson Lillyblad #1218, American Legion Leo C. Peterson Post #54, Elks Lodge 845, Purple Heart Club, and Disabled American Veteran. In June 2010 Alex participated in the Freedom Honor Flight for veterans to Washington D.C. During his retirement he enjoyed working for the City of Red Wing maintaining the city cemeteries. In his spare time he enjoyed riding bike on the Cannon Valley Trail, traveling, gardening, playing cards, watching the Vikings, and spending time with his family.
Alex is survived by his children, Ronald (Jill) Huppert of Red Wing, Sharon (Peter Helgeson) Lorraine of Hudson, WI, Robert (Kathryn Roberts) Huppert of Wasilla, AK, Sheryl (Chuck) Paton of Red Wing, Roger (Carrie) Huppert of Scottsdale, AZ, Richard (Sharon) Huppert, Sheila (Michael) Goering, and Rodney (Gina) Huppert all of Red Wing; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ralph Huppert of Hager City; sister, Agnes O'Neil of Ellsworth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; infant son, John; brothers, Mattie, Eddie, Tony, and Rudolph Huppert; sisters, Florence Murphy, Martha Nelson, Catherine Larson.
Mass of Resurrection will be at noon on Saturday, April 6, 2013 with Father Thomas M. Kommers presiding at the Church of St. Joseph in Red Wing. Burial will take place at Burnside Cemetery, with full military honors by the American Legion Leo C. Peterson Post #54. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Mahn Family Funeral Home, Bodelson-Mahn Chapel. Visitation will also take place from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Church. Memorials are preferred to the Freedom Honor Flight, Wounded Warrior Project or Red Wing Hospice.
