Albert J. Bierly, Sr., age 94, of Rochester, died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2017 at Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Mary's Campus in Rochester.
Albert was born to John and Mary (Berry) Bierly on June 13, 1923 in Jersey Shore, PA, and was raised in Nippenose Valley, PA. He graduated from Jersey Shore High School in 1941. He started his career at IBM in 1942. He was drafted into the US Army in 1943, serving in the European Theater during World War II in an Anti-Tank Company. He was discharged in 1946 having achieved the rank of Sergeant. Albert married Wanda Jane Conklin on Feb. 14, 1943 in Vestal, NY. After his discharge he continued his career with IBM living in Vestal, NY before transferring to Rochester in 1958, Durham, NC in 1965, and returning to Rochester in 1968, where he finished his career as a Procurement Engineer in the Tool and Die department until his retirement in 1982 after 41 years at IBM. He was a member of Homestead United Methodist Church and had served as a church elder. Albert enjoyed bowling in the IBM League, fishing for Walleye, hunting for Pheasants, and hunting Ducks and Geese with his sons, riding horses with his daughter, and 74 years with his loving wife Wanda.
Survivors include his wife Wanda of Rochester; his daughter Beth (GR) Hill of Chandler, OK; two sons Al, Jr. of Rochester; and Dave (Sue) of Stewartville; grandchildren Todd (Heather) Bierly, Troy (Katy) Bierly, Timothy (Anna) Bierly, Michael (Lacey) Hill, Kyle (Kellie) Hill, Naomi Hill, and Alaina (Mason) Taylor, 5 great granddaughters, one great grandson, and one great great grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and 12 siblings.
The funeral service will be 1:00 pm Thursday at Mahn Family Funeral Home - Rochester Chapel with Rev. Bruce Buller officiating. Friends may call from 11:00 am until the service time on Thursday. A reception will follow the service. Entombment will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens with Military Honors provided by the Wm. T McCoy Post #92 of the American Legion. Memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
